The Media Optimization for Microsoft Teams group policy setting must be enabled in the virtual desktop. Web browser media offload is supported with the Browser Redirection feature. See Configuring Browser Redirection for support details. This section briefly lists the system requirements for both the client and the virtual desktop when using the Media Optimization for Microsoft Teams feature. Client system for OSes supported with a specific release, see the appropriate Horizon Client release notes.
You can see the setting if you select Customize installation in the installer. Double-click the. If you are using the installation wizard, you can see that the Media Optimization for Microsoft Teams option is selected, as shown below. Media Optimization for Microsoft Teams is also installed by default in the Horizon Agent, but it is controlled with a GPO, which is not enabled by default. After setting this policy, you must log out of the Horizon desktop for the GPO policy to take effect.
Horizon Agent must be installed before Microsoft Teams. If the order is reversed, then on first run, Microsoft Teams does not detect Horizon Agent and caches an environment value that indicates the feature is running on an unsupported remote desktop.
This results in Microsoft Teams never supporting the Media Optimization feature unless the cache is deleted. To avoid this issue, be sure to install Horizon Agent before you install Microsoft Teams. Then, on first run, Microsoft Teams detects Horizon Agent and caches the correct environment value, which verifies that the feature is running on a supported remote desktop. As described in the overview of this guide, there are significant advantages to running Microsoft Teams in optimized mode.
However, as you are planning your implementation, keep in mind that end users who are not running supported Horizon Client versions Horizon Client or later for Windows, Horizon Client or later for Mac, or Horizon Client or later for Linux will not be able to take advantage of this feature. They will not, however, go back to running the full client in the virtual desktop because the GPO has set Microsoft Teams to offload audio and video to the client. Those users will instead run in fallback mode.
A user can check if Microsoft Teams is running in optimized mode, fallback mode, or natively no optimization in the virtual desktop. Audio and video quality may be reduced. Talk to your IT admin. If you enable the optimization GPO in the virtual desktop, these clients, although not officially supported, will begin implementing offload. The bugs we found in these clients during beta testing are fixed in Horizon Client for Windows version or later for Horizon 8 or Horizon Client for Windows 5.
VMware strongly recommends using the officially supported versions. For beta testing, VMware published the Horizon Client beta installer for Mac via the beta portal that supports optimization. VMware recommends that you use the officially supported version, Horizon Client or later for Mac, to get the latest functionality and bug fixes for the Mac client.
The machine based installed is also not automatically updated so IT teams will need to manage the update procedure as they would for any other application. Hi Dale, nice post. Thanks for the info on the registry entries. I used that to trick the machine wide installer to install onto a RDS server. Author: Dale Scriven Share this: Tweet. As we move forward we will provide more details via Message center. Could this be the case? A call queue is something that your telecom department sets up if you work for a department that takes calls, for example, an IT department, it rings all the people that are set up in that queue.
From what Microsoft is saying, there is an issue with the new feature and anyone that is set up on a call queue. My set-up is very basic and does not include any type of queue. In fact, I get very few external calls if any calls. Most of my work involves meetings, chats, team posts and collaboration in files. Today is Sept and still no update for the new experience.
Is there any updates for this issue. Last I heard was that Microsoft was halting roll-out to users until issues are resolved with expectation that all users would have by the end of September. I am still operating on the Aug update noted in my original post. Check for updates daily to no avail. I’m on Teams version 1. Stephan Swinford Congrats!
Still a “no go” for me. I’ve even tried for a re-install of Teams as suggested by someone else. So frustrating! My team worked with Microsoft for a few weeks to isolate why many could not see the “new experience”.
Our issue was rooted in our need to centrally deploy the software and a step required many months ago The new experience is not available on VDIs. Backhauling of Microsoft Teams audio-video RTP traffic from Citrix Workspace app users at branch office locations to a data center before going to the internet can add excessive latency. It might also cause congestion on WAN links.
This use is to identify, categorize, and steer Microsoft Teams traffic. Business broadband internet connections in many areas suffer from intermittent packet loss, periods of excessive jitter, and outages. You can use multiple meetings or chat windows for Microsoft Teams in Windows. This feature is supported with Citrix Workspace app for Windows Microsoft Teams supports Gallery , Large gallery , and Together mode layouts.
Microsoft Teams displays a 2×2 grid with video streams of four participants known as Gallery. In this case, Microsoft Teams sends four video streams to the client device for decoding. When more than four participants share video, only the last four most active speakers appear on the screen.
Microsoft Teams also provides the large gallery view with a grid up to 7×7. As a result, the Microsoft Teams conference server composites a single video feed and sends it to the client device for decoding, resulting in lower CPU consumption.
Lastly, Microsoft Teams supports Together mode , which is part of the new meeting experience. Using AI segmentation technology to digitally place participants in a shared background, Microsoft Teams puts all participants in the same auditorium. The user can control these modes during a conference call by selecting Gallery , Large gallery , or Together mode layouts in the ellipses menu. Microsoft Teams relies on video-based screen sharing VBSS , effectively encoding the desktop being shared with video codecs like H and creating a high-definition stream.
With HDX optimization, incoming screen sharing is treated as a video stream. Starting from Citrix Workspace app or higher for Windows, Linux or Mac, users can share their screens and video camera simultaneously.
Instead, the screen sharing video feed shows. The peer must then manually resume the camera sharing. In that case, other peers can still see your webcam and content and navigate back and forth to review other slides. In this scenario, the slides are rendered on the VDA. Outgoing screen sharing is also optimized and offloaded to Citrix Workspace app. Set specific permission in Citrix Workspace app for Mac to enable screen sharing. For more information, see System Requirements.
Citrix Workspace app minimum version is required. Starting with Citrix Workspace app for Windows To share a specific app:. Compatibility with app protection The screen sharing of a specific app is compatible with the app protection feature in HDX optimized Microsoft Teams. You can only select the Window option to share any open app. This feature is supported in the following versions of Citrix Workspace app there is no dependency on the VDA version or Operative System, single session or multisession :.
You can request control during a Microsoft Teams call when a participant is sharing the screen. Once you have control, you can make selections, edits, or other keyboard and mouse activities to the shared screen. To take control when a screen is being shared, click Request control button in the Microsoft Teams UI.
While you have control, you can make selections, edits, and other modifications to the shared screen. For these actions, you can use both keyboard and mouse. Give and Request control are not available if the user is sharing a single app also known as App sharing. The full desktop or monitor must be shared. When optimization for Microsoft Teams is active, the Citrix Workspace app accesses the peripherals headsets, microphones, cameras, speakers, and so forth.
Microsoft Teams does not access the devices directly. Instead, it relies on the Workspace app WebRTC media engine for acquiring, capturing, and processing the media. Microsoft Teams lists the devices for the user to select. After the peripheral is selected, Microsoft Teams caches the information of the peripherals.
As a result, the peripherals are automatically selected when you reconnect to a session from the same endpoint. Workspace app Mar 27 The legacy HDX technologies might be webcam redirection and client audio and microphone redirection. In fallback mode, the peripherals are mapped to the VDA.
The peripherals appear to the Microsoft Teams app as if they were locally attached to the virtual desktop. You can now granularly control the fallback mechanism by setting the registry keys in the VDA. For information, see Microsoft Teams fallback mode in the list of features managed through the registry. The webcam name has the Citrix HDX suffix as shown in the following graphic. The speaker and microphone device names might be slightly different or truncated when compared to the optimized mode.
Instead, HDX technologies use server-side rendering. Real-time audio performance might not be optimal. The development, release and timing of any features or functionality described in the Preview documentation remains at our sole discretion and are subject to change without notice or consultation.

Endpoint Device 3. Installing on the system drive prevents this scenario. Per-machine install prevents auto-updating, which allows proper QA of new Teams releases.
Most virtual desktop optimization clients recommend per-machine installs. Per-machine Cons: Teams updates frequently and bug fixes must be implemented often to keep up to date in the golden image. Once a user launches Teams, they are unable to prevent auto-launch. Teams will always auto-launch and cannot be turned off by the user. Teams consumes all session resources to launch. This effectively means auto-launching is increasing your user logon times because the session will be unusable until Teams finishes launching.
Per-user Pros: Teams can be prevented from auto-launching by an admin by default and a user can toggle auto-launch on or off. This reduces login times as well as resource consumption for virtual machines.

I’ve checked for updates on a daily basis to no avail. The latest update came through to my environment on August v 1. View best response. PeterRising Yes, that’s correct. I do not have the functionality showing up in my settings to be able to selected it.
Hey Chris, I’m using Teams on a Mac myself so can testify to the fact that it does work – well at least on mine anyway. They have cleared the cache, signed out and back in manually, checked for updates and reinstalled. Someone wrote in another conversation that Microsoft support told them it had been “withdrawn for adjustments” but cannot confirm that. So perhaps you need to open up a ticket with the official MS support as well, that is if the above steps doesn’t bring back the checkbox for you.
That may be the way to go. My own boss has the same issue actually and no obvious way to resolve it,. We are pleased to announce that we will be enabling users to be able to view meetings and calls in separate windows along with the other recently announced features. This is subject to change and we will provide appropriate notice for each phase through Message Center as we proceed. Once available, users will be able to view meetings and calls in separate windows from the main Microsoft Teams client. Additionally, meeting and call controls such as mute, video, chat, leave and others will now be located at the top of the meeting window so that they are always available and never block the underlying content.
This new experience will also include recently announced features such as 3×3 video, raise hands, and custom backgrounds. Note: In the future we will enable this functionality by default, but we want to provide users extra time to become familiar with having meetings open in their own sperate window.

Norman Racine thanks for this! It turns out as we use Anixis for password policy enforcement it has added this key. I have a pretty straight forward set-up of Teams, nothing special for my account not even a conference line. My last update is of Aug and did not include the option for the New Meeting Experience.
The note above indicates that Microsoft sees this first leg of the rollout to be complete, however, I still do not have it. Stephan Swinford.

If a VDI agent is not installed then the installer looks for these keys only and then fails the install however if the VDA is installed it also looks for quite a few other keys so at the moment its not a case of creating a single key to fool the installer. The change to MSI package are certainly welcome and a good initial step in providing a machine based install for Microsoft Teams which hopefully will also migrate across to the other apps that are guilty of the same behaviour cough OneDrive.
I personally would like it be a choice for the customer whether they want to go to the standard version of teams ensuring that they stay up to date with the latest versions automatically across their estate or take a steadier approach by using the machine based install versions without the VDI technology search behaviour which would require more administrative effort for IT teams but a further degree of control that most companies find comforting.
A couple of things worth noting is that like its non machine based install counterpart Teams is not yet optimised for VDI voice and video capabilities, such as the HDX realtime pack so Microsoft recommend disabling the calling feature within teams.
The machine based installed is also not automatically updated so IT teams will need to manage the update procedure as they would for any other application. To learn more about how to prepare your network for Teams, see Prepare your organization’s network for Teams.

Microsoft has worked together with virtual desktop vendors, such as Citrix and VMware, to implement an optimized mode of Teams. This enables H. While significantly improved over , there are still feature limitations in the optimized version of Teams. It can be tempting to include the Teams app with the rest of the Office installation to gauge end-user interest.
However, Teams uses Electron and Optimization, and some of those limitations require a VDI architect to consider unique design decisions compared to the rest of the Office suite.
The fast pace and complexity to implement Teams requires careful planning, design, and proper hardware prior to implementation to prevent data loss and performance degradation. Consider using a managed virtual desktop infrastructure provider to help your team avoid set-up and implementation errors, and keep Teams running smoothly for your entire remote workforce.
